Introduction
The IPEVO Totem 120 is marketed as a collaboration camera. It’s hybrid design supports both document camera and a conference camera functions. A document camera is a webcam that is designed to view printed documents or close-up images of items or content on a desktop surface. In conference camera mode, the IPEVO has two lenses including a wide-view lens for capturing multiple participants at once. The device itself can manually extend upward to allow for better eye-level camera angles and then pivot to transition to document camera mode.
About this Device
This device is truly a hybrid of two products. It is tall, and adjustable from just over a foot un-extended to nearly two feet when fully extended. This height adjustment helps in accommodating appropriate eye-level communication while in a video call. Its very slim profile means that it will not be intrusive even if placed in front of a display/tv in a conference room. It has two fixed cameras, one with a 120° view angle and another with an 80° view angle. Both of these cameras are 8MP allowing for up to 4k resolution. The four physical buttons provide handy dynamic controls directly on the device without the need for dedicated software. Two of these buttons enable IPEVO’s “AI Stage” and “AI Voice” on-board processing, which allow for AI-enhanced person tracking and “AI-enhanced human voice” settings that help with background noise elimination.
While the build quality of this device seems adequate for most applications, we did have questions as to how well the plastic housing, and adjustment mechanisms would hold up to regular clinical use. A more robust form factor could add more longevity to this device but would likely greatly increase bot the footprint and cost of the unit. IPEVO includes a 2-year limited warranty from date of purchase on this device.
Innovative Features
The flexible design of the device is really it’s most innovative feature. The three imaging modes: Conference mode (vertical camera placement), demo mode (45° camera placement), and document mode (90° camera placement) are well thought out. In Conference mode, the Totem acts much like a standard webcam, able to capture the video and audio from speakers in a small room environment. The demo mode allows both the lower part of the presenter and the document or table content to be visible at the same time. Document mode is useful when the table content needs to be the primary focus. The flexibility to use one device for so many applications make it stand out in the market space. Another stand out feature is the fact that the device does all of its AI processing on the device rather than through software installed on the computer. This means that the computer resources are not impacted by having the device connected to it and allows for rapid setup and deployment to end users. It is also beneficial to have physical buttons on the device for controlling it directly. Clinician’s wearing gloves or transitioning rapidly between patients will appreciate not having to manage settings via software.
