MedWand Mobile Clinic

MedWand Mobile Clinic Overview

Device Description

The Mobile Clinic from MedWand is a multi-function clinical exam device designed to collect a range of common vitals and images needed by a clinician for direct to consumer, virtual consultations, and exam documentation purposes. The MedWand connects to the provided Android tablet via a USB-C cable. The tablet provides power to the MedWand peripheral, and collects and transmits exam information in a asynchronous exam, or through a live video remote exam.

Device Category Description

An all in one multi exam device with functionality that is simple enough for a patient to use, but robust enough to be used for clinical diagnosis, consultations, and documentation has been a key area of interest within the telehealth market. In the last five years TTAC has seen a few devices obtain their FDA clearance for multiple exam functions and enter the telehealth market space. It is important when looking at these devices to consider what clearances the FDA approved and for what use cases.

Innovative Features

The Mobile Clinic is fairly unique in its ability to allow a provider to guide the exam remotely through MedWand’s browser-based video interface, or direct integration with existing EHR and patient management systems. Providers can click a button from their web browser to capture vitals, store specific exam images, and listen to heart and lung sounds from the patient’s location. These data points are then available in the stored exam summary for a more detailed review later, or for visit documentation. These provider-centric features may interest specialists or primary care providers who desire more granular control over their telehealth exams.

Device Features

Exam Types
The MedWand Device is a multifunctional exam device that is capable of FDA certified thermometer, SPO2 (blood oxygenation, and pulse rate), Stethoscope (heart, lungs, and abdominal), HD Camera (otoscopy, pharyngoscopy, and dermatoscopy) as well as pending clearance for ECG functions.

Peripherals
The MedWand ecosystem also includes tight integration with FDA cleared Blood Pressure Monitor, Spirometer, and Glucometer. It also can integrate with FDA exempt Weight scale.

Summary

While the remote provider may not be holding the MedWand device this system seems to allow the provider a significant amount of control over the exam, including selecting the exam type, choosing which information is captured, and providing live video and chat functionality to interact with the patient. While some of the exam types may not have the same level of quality as a standalone device, the convenience and workflow benefits of having an all in one tool may offset those concerns depending on the use case.
