Meeting Owl 3

The Meeting Owl 3 from Owl Labs, is the 3rd generation of their innovative tabletop conference solution. This device is designed to meet the need for hybrid meetings, which have both in-person and virtual attendees. Combining multiple physical and virtual attendees has applications in group therapy, instruction, and team care that are useful in healthcare applications. The Meeting Owl features a 360° camera that captures a whole meeting area in a single strip at the top of a video stream, as well as the ability to slice this larger image dynamically to feature up to 3 speakers at a time.

About this Device

The Meeting Owl 3 employs a high build quality and some interesting design aspects that make this device unique. The device sits at ~4.5” in width and ~11” tall. The weight of the device is about 2.5 lbs. It comes with a 6ft USB-C to USB-C cable. The device features Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, but these are only for firmware updates, mobile device management, and multiple camera pairing. To use the device, you will need to be wired into it with the USB-C cable.

The camera uses a 3 speaker system at the base of the device for audio out. The speakers have a max volume of 80 db Sound Pressure Level (SPL). It features an 8-microphone beamform array for audio detection up to 18.5′ away. The video pickup range is up to 10′ from the device in a 360° field of view. A single 360° panoramic fisheye camera drives this video pickup to reduce image distortion. The camera should be placed within 3’ (1m) from the in-room TV or monitor in order to reduce issues with user line of sight. The device range can be extended with an additional Owl Labs microphone or an additional paired Meeting Owl for a range boost of 8′ in the direction of the paired device. The paired device must be within 4-8 feet from the primary.

Innovation Features

The primary key feature of the Meeting Owl 3 is the video feed from the device that supports a 360° video view. The Owl can then dynamically slice this large 360° view to frame those that are speaking around the device. This function allows for a better remote experience for those not physically in the room. Additionally as the audio from the remote participants comes from the Meeting Owl itself, it makes the users in the meeting more aware that they should respond to remote participants by speaking directly to the device itself. The ability to pair multiple devices together to expand the microphone and video reach of the Owl devices across a clinic space or conference room is also a key distinguishing feature for the Meeting Owl 3.

Summary

When connecting a virtual endpoint to a group of in-person participants the Meeting Owl 3 provides a straightforward all-in-one solution. The video quality of the Meeting Owl 3 is significantly better than previous generations, meaning that even when the 360° is sliced up to 3 times participants sitting around the owl are still clearly seen. The speaker tracking and noise reduction work well, and without any significant user interaction. Overall, this innovative device is a compelling addition for those use cases that require a hybrid virtual/in-person experience.
