The HP Poly Studio R30 is an all-in-one webcam and sound bar designed for small conference room (or small-medium clinic room) spaces. Its relatively small form factor (when compared to other conference room systems) allows for it to be mounted on top of either a computer monitor or as part of a TV based conference installation. It features a 4K UHD camera sensor that allows for better clarity, especially when using the AI-enhanced speaker tracking features.
About this Device
The camera system is based around a 120-degree field-of-view camera with a 4K UHD sensor. The microphone system is a 3-microphone beam form system with active noise suppression. The R30 is powered by an external power adapter and connects to a computer via an included USB-C to USB-A Cable (the R30 output is USB-C). This cable is replaceable, and not hard-wired into the R30 itself. This is useful as cables tend to be a common point of failure in many camera systems. If the USB cable is worn out or damaged, the user can simply replace the cable and not the whole camera unit.
While most of the core function of the R30 are available right out of the box, some of the more innovative features and settings for the Studio R30 are managed by the downloadable “Poly Lens” software. The initial Poly Lens setup was a little tricky as it required a default password that wasn’t in the documentation included in the device. However, with setup complete we had access to adjust many of the device video options, change the type of user tracking, and update the firmware on the device itself.
Innovative Features
The “Poly DirectorAI” smart camera technology features five customizable framing presets. The system is designed to focus on faces, making sure that they stay in the frame even as participants move. These tracking and framing presets are set via the Poly Lens software, but run on the camera itself, improving live performance for both the camera, and the connected computer system. Additionally, this means that the camera settings can be configured on one computer, and the settings will remain on the device when it is plugged into another machine. For organizations, Poly also has wireless device management and other hardware monitoring options via their “Poly+ Enterprise” extended service agreement for an additional cost.
For general functions the camera is quick and easy to setup. It requires no more technical knowhow than using a webcam. Simply plug in the USB cord and the computer automatically recognizes the camera, speaker, and microphones. There are no physical controls on the device so everything is controlled via software on your computer or with an optional Bluetooth remote.

Summary
The HP Poly Studio R30 is a straightforward and well-featured product that allow for better conferencing over a traditional webcam, all though at a much higher price point. This device is ideal for a small conference space, or perhaps in use on a cart solution, though it might be overkill for a single user at their desktop space. Having a device that supports video, speaker audio and microphone in a large webcam form factor is intriguing, even before you consider the AI-enhanced speaker tracking and noise cancellation. The wide-angle camera also makes this appealing as an all-in-one room-based solution.
