Diastolic Blood Pressure, based on mean for three consecutive readings
Bold numbers indicate outliers for each subject
Methods
Blood pressures were obtained on eleven adult volunteers, six men and five women ages 20 – 60. Subjects were seated, resting and the left arm was used. There was a rest period of about 3-4 minutes between each blood pressure reading. There was a rest period of 5 minutes between each different monitor used. Three readings were obtained consecutively from one unit at a time; then proceeding to the next make & model. Date, time and arm position were documented and the blood pressure & pulse readings and any comments from the subjects were recorded.
Results
Three readings for each of the four blood pressure units were obtained on each subject. Therefore, each subject had their blood pressure taken twelve times. For each of the three readings per subject per unit, the Systolic Mean and Diastolic Mean were obtained. The Table shows the Mean values for Systolic and Diastolic obtained from each device listed by user. Subjectively, most of the readings were in a similar or reasonable range of each other. The outlier from the mean was identified for each instance, at least 2 mmHg difference from the mean. In one instance there was no outlier (Adult Subject G Diastolic) as the readings had such a narrow range of 80 – 83 mmHg.
The Omron HEM-670IT (wrist) unit had the most instances as an outlier, eleven out of 22 episodes. Five were Systolic readings with an average deviation of 5.4 mm Hg lower than the mean. Six were Diastolic readings with an average deviation of 5.95 mm Hg lower than the mean. The iHealth BP3 had five outliers. The Withings BP-800 and Omron BP791IT had three outliers each.
Conclusions
Three of the four units had reasonable ranges of similar blood pressure readings. The Omron HEM-670IT wrist unit provided lower systolic or diastolic measurements, about fifty percent of the time.
