Keeping up with mHealth developments and industry innovations is a never-ending process. TTAC’s last toolkit provided an overview of the mHealth market, with general discussion of devices, definitions, and how mHealth may benefit your organization. While that toolkit focused on mobile devices, this toolkit will look beyond the devices and explore how to choose an mHealth application (or simply “app”) for use in your organization or home.

As one of the fastest-growing markets in telehealth, mHealth and the associated mobile apps are demanding our attention.  Many existing telemedicine vendors are integrating mobile software for use on smart phones or tablets, as scores of new developers create consumer apps for self-monitoring.  This is happening at lightning speed, with regulatory, security, and privacy issues left in the wake.

About This Technology – includes sections that provide general information on mHealth apps, including a Technology Overview that examines different app features, a Deployment and Support guideline that helps look at issues around using mHealth apps, a Standards and Resources section that provides links to websites and information available elsewhere on the web, and finally a section listing References and Literature Review.

Product Information – while the mHealth market is changing rapidly, making technology assessments almost immediately out-of-date, we will still cover several key concepts and products for those interested in mHealth. Included in this section are materials on the physical devices used to test the apps (Hardware) as well as the three glucometer apps chosen for this particular evaluation (Software).

Product Assessment – We downloaded and reviewed three mobile glucometer apps onto three of the lab’s cellular phones for review.  Device specifications pertinent to our glucometer testing are included (Tested Glucometers), as is summary information on both the TTAC testing procedure (Testing Process) and results (Testing Results).
