The oral cavity shot is an example of a macro shot that requires external lighting based on the subject matter and the nature of capturing light in a cavity. The oral cavity image should display the true color of the oral cavity, which is tricky considering the oral cavity does not have naturally occurring light. The camera should be able to handle the external light source without discoloring the teeth based on the external light color. The camera that can handle this shot without an external light source can be particularly useful; however depth of field and focus will tend to suffer. Acceptable depth of field in this image can vary based on the image you wish to obtain and the focal plane you were attempting to capture. Due to the size of the subject matter, and depending on the focal range of the lens being used, the depth of field and focal area may be limited in this shot. Detail in the teeth and gums should be able to be appreciated. The image should be free of specular highlights and reflections on the teeth. There should be not distortions in teeth shape or oral cavity shape. This shot is obtained with the camera parallel to the frontal plane of the oral cavity and the camera height at the same level as the focal point.
