The image collection created by the TTAC for the DSLR camera toolkit represents the largest and most comprehensive image set done to date. Given that the images that we gathered lose their detail at smaller sizes, and that the thousands of images make for rather confusing pages, we have broken down the materials into sets of images based on category and subject, each with downloadable PDFs that have the complete collection of images embedded within them.*Note – We can make a DVD of these images if requested. Camera Body Comparison Shots
The camera body comparison shots were taken utilizing every camera that TTAC had in for the DSLR camera evaluation. There was consistency in location, imager, subject and documentation. 9 sets of subject images were obtained. A shot was taken on each camera body utilizing the appropriate macro lens and zoom lens, and each lens had a total of two shots, one with light and one without. The macro lens shots utilized the DoctorsEyes Ring and bilateral wing lights as a light source and the zoom lens shots utilized on camera lighting when it was available. The zoom lens shots were taken at approximately 55mm for each shot. All shots were taken at maximum resolution. The distance from the lens glass to the subject was recorded for every image taken. The shots were taken trying to take the best possible image the camera could produce for the lens and lighting available, while attempting to frame the subject shots the same across all camera bodies. Lens Comparison Shots
All lens comparison shots were obtained by using the Canon EOS 7D camera body. The shots were taken utilizing the Canon MT-24EX Macro Twin Ring Light Flash, with newly installed batteries, at varying levels with each shot. Each lens was cleansed with a lint free cleaning cloth prior to use. The shots were taken utilizing the following 3 Canon lens: EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM, EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM, and EF 180mm f/3.5L Macro USM. Each shot was metered and measured, and the data was recorded. The shots were taken to frame the subject, so the distances were variable. All shots were taken at ISO 100 and shutter speed of 1/125. The full body, posterior torso and head & neck shots were taken in portrait mode and the eye and oral frontal view shots were taken in landscape mode. The goal of these shots was to be able to compare the same shots taken with three different macro lens, and the settings necessary to get each shot with the given lens. Light Comparison Shots
All the shots in for this image comparison were taken on the Canon EOS 5D Mark II, unless otherwise labeled. The additional cameras used were the Canon SD3500 point and shoot and the Canon EOS 7D, and they were used to support features that were not able to be demonstrated with the Canon EOS 5D Mark II. The Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM lens was utilized in all of the shots except for the shots taken on the Canon SD3500 point and shoot camera. The lens was cleaned at the beginning of shooting and thereafter as necessary. The images were taken at a shutter priority of 1/125, the ISO was variable for each shot, each shot was metered. All variables were recorded for each shot. For each light source a shot was taken at set distances, where distance and not necessarily framing was the priority.
